โฆ Synopsis
The dipole strengths of vibrational modes. nlcasured by electronenergy-loss spectroscopy, for some ordered adsorbate hyers of CO and S on Cu(100) and CO and 0 on Ni(100) have been nnalyzed in terms of surfaa: lattice dymmics. Useful information pertaining to~thc dipole active displacements of the substrate snd adsorbste atoms is obtained_

The effect of possible large electric field gradients near metal surfaas on the Raman optical activity (ROA) of adsorbed molecules is discussed. It is shown that large gradients would cause unusually high values of the measured circular intensity differences, orders of mapitude higher than those mea
