Abstract
Electroabsorption spectra of high mobility semiconductors and quantum wells are presented and compared with nonβperturbative theoretical models. Since even moderate fields mix eigenstates in these materials very strongly a differential technique is applied, where a dc voltage defines the field in the sample which then is altered by a small modulation voltage. The response to that modulation is generated from the most sensitive part of an electronic state, the envelope function, which facilitates the analysis of the spectral lineshape. The difference of the response of delocalized electrons in bulk semiconductors and spatially confined electrons will be elucidated, including the intermediate case of 0.1 Β΅mβthick single crystals and fieldβlocalisation of electrons in a superlattice.
