Atypical antipsychotic drugs are widely used in the treatment of schizophrenia, and clinical evidence has shown that early and prolonged intervention with these drugs will improve the long-term outcome. It is still unclear, however, whether the atypical antipsychotic drugs are also neuroprotective.
