A mild and efficient method for the N-alkylation of aromatic amines and related compounds is described. The approach developed herein utilizes, as the key step, a transmetallation between a cupric salt and the dialkylzinc species.

Secondary and tertiary amines are selectively prepared in high yields by a one-pot reduction / multiple alkylation procedure from aromatic nitro compounds with styrenes, cyclic olefins or heterofunctionalised olefins, carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of [Rh(cod)CIL as catalyst.
