Trisdehydro-emetinium salts of type IVa were prepared from rac. 2-Dehydroisoemetine (IIa) by oxidation with mercury(I1)-acetate. IVa was reduced with sodium borohydride to a mixture of rac. 2-dehydro-emetine (IIIa) and IIa. The same sequence of reactions was carried out with the N-acetyl derivatives IIc, IVc and IIIc. Under bzsic conditions or on heating, IVa breaks down to V and VI.
