✦ Synopsis

The W spectrum of the SiClz radi& has been the subject of some controversy in the literature and earlier claims for tic spectrum hare been recently rcfured. The first absorption band showing a vi progression with a maximum at 317 4 nm and assigned to the x 'B1 +XtAr transition of SiClz from the pas phase flash photolysis of SizCle is reported. The ass&nment of the spectrum to SitI2 1s based on chemical widen-obtained from expenmcnts employing t-butene as a scavenger and using I.l+&chlorosilacyclobutane 2s an alternatlve SOLUO~ of SiCl2.
