A design is described with which elastic and sufficiently uniform compression of singlecrystal specimens by ~ 0.4 to 0.5% can be achieved at liquid helium temperatures. The provision of a sliding side support for the specimen, which prevents shear deformations arising in the compression process, mak

โฆ Synopsis
A design is given for a device that can carry up to four single crystals mounted on individual three-way goniometers for mutual alignment of their crystallographic planes. The assembly, held at 4 K in the clear split of a superconducting magnet, may be rotated to a precise angle by simple external means. The rotation of the device permits the formation of horizontally-polarized, singledomain crystals of ferromagnetic materials when only a vertical magnetic field is available.
