✦ Synopsis

The development of a serradella dehuller was undertaken because the low 10% germination of unhulled serradella seed was hindering adoption of serradella pastures by graziers . Manual processing of unhulled serradella seed showed that high germination seed could be obtained only through both dehulling and scarification of the naked seed . Dehulling and scarification raised the seed germination from 10% to 85% . This preliminary work showed that two processes based upon quite dif ferent mechanisms warranted investigation , namely hull cracking by gentle compression (popping) , and shearing the hull between circular rotating plates (threshing) . The testing of small prototypes showed that only the threshing process had potential to process unhulled seed at the commonly used commercial rate of 500 kg / h . The testing of a small thresher unit prototype provided important information about the basic dehulling operation which was required to design a commercialscale dehulling unit .
