✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Proton and deuterium n.m.r. measurements in acetylacetone and 3,3‐d~2~‐acetylacetone are reported. Deuterium‐isotope effects on chemical shifts and keto–enol equilibria as a function of concentration in the two solvents triethylamine and pyrrole are determined. A strong solvent concentration dependence for d‐isotope effects is observed in triethylamine; in pyrrole no dependence is obtained. The results are interpreted in terms of an equilibrium between the symmetrical (C~2v~) and asymmetrical (C~s~) enolic forms in acetylacetone. The usefulness of ^2^H n.m.r. for the study of exchange processes is demonstrated.

The proton NMR spectra of four deuteriated species of propylene ozonide and five of ethylene ozonide were analysed. The deuterium isotope shifts were 0.0140ppm (H gem to D), 0.0034ppm (H trans to D) and 0.0015 ppm (H cis to D) for propylene ozonide. The same trends were observed in ethylene ozonide.

3-Pentanone-2,2-d 2 was subjected to enolization by lithium diisopropylamide (LDA), lithium N-isopropyl(trimethylsilyl)amide (LITA), and lithium hexamethyldisilazide (LHMDS). Internal deuterium kinetic isotope effects were measured by 1 H-NMR analysis of the corresponding trimethylsilyl enol ethers
