The first excited triplet state of dimesitylcarbene has been generated in solution at room temperature. It has a lifetime of 60 ns and shows fluorescence with A mp~ = 501 nm and absorption with A,,. = 360 nm. This species is quenched by oxygen and carbon tetrachloride with rate constants of (4.4kO.8
