✦ Synopsis

The binding energies of water and methanol to NO: have been measured 10 be 14.8 k 2.3 and 19.2 ? 2.3 kcal/mol, respectively, using energy-resolved collision-induced dissociation of H#-NO: and CH,O( H )-NO: in a flowing afterglow triple quadrupole apparatus. These values are used with literature thermochemistry to derive proton affinities for nitric acid and methyl nitrate: PA(HONOZ) = 177.7 + 2.3 kcal/mol andPA(CHXONOZ) = 175.0f2.5 kcal/mol. Theseresultsarein goodagreement with recent calculations by Lee and Rice, but only the methyl nitrate result is in agreement with experimental results of Cacace and coworkers.

The successive C-H bond dissociation energies of CH,, &Hz. C2H4, and H&O (ketene) are determined using large basis sets and a high level of correlation treatment. For CHI, C2H2, and C2H4 the computed values are in excellent agreement with experiment. Using our results we recommend 107.9 +2.0 and 96.
