✦ Synopsis

Mutagenic and gas chromatographic analyses of three motor oil samples reacted with nitrogen dioxide indicated the presence of many mutagenic nitroaromatic compounds, none of which predominates. Comparison of motor oils nitrated with nitrogen dioxide with used motor oil from an automobile shows similarities, particularly when the starting oil is the same.
