## Abstract The prevalence of antibodies to hepatitis E virus (antiβHEV) was investigated in patients with acute hepatitis, and correlated with the clinical features. Sera from 110 patients with acute hepatitis and 60 healthy controls were tested for antiβHEV, antibody to hepatitis C virus (antiβHC

β¦ Synopsis
Abstract
A newly developed assay for IgA class antibody to hepatitis E virus (IgA antiβHEV) was used to study 145 serum samples collected during an outbreak of an enterically transmitted hepatitis that occurred in 3 villages in the lower Shebeli region of Southern Somalia between January, 1988 and November, 1989. A total of 52.4% of the afflicted patients were found positive for IgA antiβHEV, and 73.1% of these were also positive for IgM. Both antibodies disappeared during the convalescence period. Similar results were also seen in serum obtained from sporadic cases of acute waterborne hepatitis in Pakistan. Β© 1993 WileyβLiss, Inc.

GB virus-C/hepatitis G virus (GBV-C/HGV) is an RNA virus that can be transmitted by transfusion with the diagnosis based on the detection of serum GBV-C/HGV RNA by reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction. In order to evaluate the role of antibodies to the E2 protein (anti-E2) of GBV-C/HGV in
Hepatitis A virus (HAV) RNA was extracted from the sera of patients with acute hepatitis and then detected by molecular hybridization using cloned HAV complementary DNA (cDNA). HAV RNA was detected in 20 of 85 patients with acute HAV infection, mainly during the prodromal stage, or early during the

## Abstract One hundred fiftyβfour consecutive patients with sporadic acute hepatitis, who were seen at a city hospital in the Kathmandu valley of Nepal in 1997, were studied. IgM antibodies to hepatitis A virus were detected in four patients (3%), IgM antibodies to hepatitis B core in four patient
Sera from four groups of patients with different serologic markers of HBV infection were examined for HBV DNA using molecular hybridization technique and for IgM class anti-HBc using an ELISA based on the antibody capture principle. Results of HBV DNA assay were generally in good agreement with the
