General methods for the evaluation of concentration profiles and the design of reactors when there is a multi-order reaction rate are formulated from the differential equations of axial dispersion and from the finite difference equations of stagewise backmixing.

A design method is presented which enables distillation columns to be designed by manual calculation. The method allows for finite transfer rates and backmixing in both phases but the assumption of constant molar enthalpy is retained.
