β¦ Synopsis
A series of initiators have been developed for living radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) mediated by ruthenium(If) complexes [e.g., RuCI2(PPh3)3; Ph = C6H5]. These initiators include chloromethanes, ~-chloroesters, ct-chloroketones, and cc-bromoesters, among which CCI3COCH3, CHCI2COPh, and H(MMA)2-Br me the best to give polymers with conlrolled molecular weights and very narrow MWDs (Mw/Mn = 1.1-1.2). The wide variation of the initiators therefcxe demonsa, ates the generality ofonr transition metal-mediated living radical polyme~zations.

## Abstract A new type of mediator for cobalt(II)βmediated radical polymerization is reported which is based on 1,3βbis(2βpyridylimino)isoindolate (bpi) as ancillary ligand. The modular synthesis of the bis(pyridylimino)isoindoles (bpiH) employed in this work is based on the condensation of 2βamino
