Barrett and Foschi have introduced a flexure, three-point bend test specimen for measuring the fracture work of wood [i]. In addition to providing essentially pure mode II conditions at the crack tip, this simple, yet efficient, test allows for a continuous crack growth.

More recently, that loading concept was extended to bulk materials [2], composites [3], and adhesive joints [4]; the latter configuration is shown in Fig. i.
