β¦ Synopsis
Particulate fluidized beds can be regarded as devices for the measurement of particle drag under conditions pertaining to more or less concentrated suspensions. Therefore, the physical essence of results obtained from fluidization experiments should be applicable to other situations, too. This statement is proved by taking into consideration the hydrodynamics of bubble columns and the suspension of solid particles in agitated vessels. As an alternative, the author developed a coherent description of pressure drop in fixed beds and of bed expansion for particulate fluidized beds which takes into account the dependence of the drag on particles concentration Cll. the fluid density and the average velocity in the pores. From the definition (6) of the Euler number, it follows
