✦ Synopsis
cyanoethylene ( 2 M O 0 C ) , or N-phenyltriazolinedione (2& 40°C). Observations favoring delocalized ylide intermediates are the steric integrity of the cisltrans-tropilidene dioxides ( I ) (X=Y=O, R=H)13] and of the cis-hydrazone (8), as well as the finding that trans-dioxide ( 1 5 ) ( v ~= ~= 1713 cm-') reacts with NaBH4 and with diazomethane without trans+cis isomerization to give the alcohol ( 1 4 a ) [acetate ( I 4 b ) : m.p. ca. 2 0 T , t 2 -~= 4 . 6 9 ; 51,2=4.6; J 2 , 3 x O Hz] and ( 1 6 ) [m.p. 34"C, ~~, -~= 6 . 8 7 ; t 3 , -H=7.11], respectively.
The structures of the new compounds (3) to ( 6) , (8) to ( l o ) , and ( 1 4 ) to ( 1 6 ) have been confirmed by elemental analyses and by UV, IR, MS, 'H-NMR, and 13C-NMR data.
