✦ Synopsis

In this paper, we contribute to the theory and development of defuzziÿcation techniques. First we deÿne the core of a fuzzy set. Then we formulate a set of criteria for defuzziÿcation in arbitrary universes, ordered universes, and the set of the real numbers. Finally, we classify the most widely used defuzziÿcation techniques into di erent groups and we examine the prototypes of each group with respect to the defuzziÿcation criteria. We show that the maxima methods behave well with respect to the more basic defuzziÿcation criteria, and hence are good candidates for fuzzy reasoning systems. On the other hand, the distribution methods and the area methods do not fulÿll the basic criteria, but they exhibit the property of continuity that makes them suitable for fuzzy controllers.

For two example systems, controlled by either a linear controller or one of five fuzzy controllers (with different defuzzification procedures), responses to step functions are presented in time and in frequency space to qualitatively judge and select the most appropriate defuzzification procedure. The fuzzy partition validity is a necessary measure to ÿx the number of groups in the fuzzy algorithms which need to know this data. We propose a measure based on the membership probabilities. Moreover, we propose a new concept of the hard partition based on the metric of the groups. The hard partit
