โฆ Synopsis
was the convenor of the DSA Study Group on NGOs and for several years during the 1980s and 1990s was an active member of the DSA Council. At the time of his death, shortly before the Conference, he was Research Director at INTRAC, but many DSA members will also know him from his time at SCF, the University of Reading and the University of Wales (Swansea). Peter will be remembered as a leading scholar-practitioner of development-he was always keen to think through ideas about development but was equally committed to rolling up his sleeves and engaging with the practical provision of support to poor people. His academic contributions-on the role of participation in development and the need for frameworks for impact assessment that could deal with the complexity of what happens 'on the ground'-were path-breaking, and set the debates that would emerge in the 1990s as these issues moved to the centre of the development agenda. We missed Peter at the conference, both for his intellectual contribution and for the laughter that was always around when he relaxed in the bar or the tea room. Our thoughts and condolences go to his family and his colleagues.
