โฆ Synopsis
This issue of JMAA and the next are dedicated to Dr. George Leitmann, educator, engineer, editor, leader, and consultant. George continues in a distinguished career marked by excellence in all of these areas. This is very rare in a single individual but he does all these things and more! Here, on the occasion of his 75th Birthday, we celebrate the life and accomplishments of George Leitmann.
After service in the Army in World War II George received a B.S. and M.S. in physics from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in engineering science from the University of California at Berkeley. Except for seven years with the US Navy Ordnance Test Station at China Lake he has spent his entire career at Berkeley in the College of Engineering. He has held various research, teaching, and administrative positions including those of Acting Dean and Chairman of the Faculty. He is currently a Professor in the Graduate College. He has served on the Editorial Boards of 10 journals and for 30 years with JMAA, 16 of these as Editor. Under his guidance the Journal has prospered and grown in quality, size, and scope. It currently has about 100 Associate Editors. Papers by many of this editorial group compose these two volumes in testimonial to him.
George's many honors include a membership in the National Academy ลฝ . of Engineering, three honorary doctorates Vienna, Paris, and Darmstadt , the Humboldt Medal, the Alexander von Humboldt Prize, membership in six foreign academies, many visiting professorships, and others too numerous to mention. His publications number more than 275! Although George is formally retired, he continues to contribute to his profession in both technical and leadership roles. We are very pleased to honor this giant of the scholarly world.
Respectfully dedicated by the Editorial Board of JMAA and by his co-Editor,
