The dipole moments of a number of substituted ureas are measured in dioxane. It is shown that the mesomeric moment of urea is reduced by inductive or steric effects of the alkyl substituents, which have probably cis conformation to the CO‐group. Some tetrasubstituted ureas are also measured in other solvents. The rather large solvent effect is not only a function of the dielectric constant, so that the geometric shape of the molecule cannot be the only reason for it. The hypothesis is suggested that the different possible conformations of the molecule have in different solvents a different statistical weight.
