A problem is posed, for theories which identify the symmetry of the order parameter in the copper oxide superconductors as d-wave, by the fact that (a) the inelastic quasiparticle lifetime in the normal state is anomalously short, and (b) superconductivity appears to be surprisingly robust against scattering by nonmagnetic impurities. Both these considerations are often taken as evidence against the d-wave identification; here I examine possible loopholes in the argument related to (a),
