## Abstract Single crystals of the title compound have been obtained by reaction of Gd~3~(ClH~2~CCOO)~9~(H~2~O)~5~ with 2,2β²βbipyridyl (bipy) in a solution of ethanol and water. Gd~2~(ClH~2~CCOO)~6~(bipy)~2~ crystallises in the triclinic space group __P__$\bar {1}$ (__Z__ = 2) with __a__ = 959.5(3)
