β¦ Synopsis
The compounds CeMIn 5 (MΒΌ Co; Rh, Ir) have been shown to exhibit heavy fermion behavior. In order to better understand this effect and the nature of the observed superconductivity, we have synthesized and characterized the non-magnetic analogs, LaMIn 5 (MΒΌ Co; Rh, Ir). The structures of LaCoIn 5 , LaRhIn 5 , and LaIrIn 5 were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. CeMIn 5 and LaMIn 5 compounds are isostructural and adopt a tetragonal structure with space group P4/mmm, Z ΒΌ 1: Lattice parameters are a ΒΌ 4:6399Γ°4Γ and c ΒΌ 7:6151Γ°6Γ ( A for LaCoIn 5 , a ΒΌ 4:6768Γ°3Γ and c ΒΌ 7:5988Γ°7Γ ( A for LaRhIn 5 , and a ΒΌ 4:6897Γ°6Γ and c ΒΌ 7:5788Γ°12Γ ( A for LaIrIn 5 . We compare these experimental data with band structure computations and examine structural trends that affect the magnetic and transport properties of these compounds.
