✦ Synopsis
New compounds with the formula U 3 TiX 5 have been synthesized for X ؍ Ge, Sn. The crystal structure of U 3 TiGe 5 has been re5ned from single crystal X-ray di4raction data to R(F) ؍ 0.032, R w ؍ 0.037, and was found to crystallize with the hexagonal U 3 TiSb 5 structure type, with a ؍ 8.495(1) A s and c ؍ 5.711(1) A s . Isotypism was found from X-ray powder di4raction analysis for the stannide U 3 TiSn 5 , with a ؍ 9.200(2) A s and c ؍ 6.128(3) A s . Magnetic susceptibility measurements carried out on polycrystalline powder samples reveal ferromagnetic type ordering at T C ؍ 76 and 65 K for U 3 TiGe 5 and U 3 TiSn 5 , respectively. Neutron powder di4raction studies of U 3 TiGe 5 show that the uranium magnetic moments have two components: a ferromagnetic component (M F ؍ 0.9 B at 1.4 K) along the c axis and a triangular component (M T ؍ 0.4 B at 1.4 K) in the hexagonal plane antiferromagnetically ordered along the c axis.
