β¦ Synopsis
The cross sections for the deexcitation of He(2 'S), He( 2 'S), and He{ 2 'P) by SiH, and GeH, have been measured and compared with those for the deexcitation by CH,. The major deexcitation processes are ascribed to Penning ionization. The cross sections obtained for He (2 'S) are more than two hundred times as large as the total optical-emission cross sections determined recently by another group. The magnitudes of the cross-section values obtained, which are dependent on both electronic states of excited helium atoms and target molecules. are discussed in terms ofthe energy-transfer mechanism or the interaction responsible for deexcitation transition.

Rotationally inelastic cross sections have been calculated according to a quantat static rotation (sudden) approximation and the quasiclassical method for 4He + If(j = 12) (rigid rotas) at an ioitial relative kinetic energy of 0.M eV\_ Comparison of the two sets of results shows excelient agreement.
Exact quantum calculations are presented for fine structure cross sections in photodissociation of Naz. Resonance peaks in the NzI(~P,,) cross section arise from the highest two quasibound levels supported by the electronic barrier in the B \*$ state. Long-range non-adiabaticity is rendered negligib
A novel method for determining absolute chemihuninescence cross sections without knowledge of the absolute detection sensitivity is described for reactions involving eIectronicaUy excited reactants. A study of the Ca(4s4p 3P) + NzO reaction under singie-collkion conditions is presented, and a photon
