β¦ Synopsis
Samples of polycrystalline YBa2Cu30 v superconductor were prepared by melt textured growth (MTG). The melting parameters, including temperature gradient at solidification, melting temperature, melting time and cooling solidification rate, are key factors in preparing textured samples. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that the sample has a dense, layered structure with regular alignments of plate-shaped crystals. The superconducti-rig~afist-li~-n oTt~e samples vv-as-mea-sured using the four point Efid ii~iJ~ual inductance methods. The zero resistance temperature and onset of diamagnetism of the samples occur at 92 and 91 K, respectively. The critical currents have been measured under magnetic fields from 0 up to 7 T at 77 K using the d.c. four point method. The highest Jc for the best sample in zero field at 77 K was 11 000 A cm -2. The results for Jc in magnetic fields show that the field dependence of Jc which exists in sintered materials is greatly reduced. This means that the limitations of the weak link problem in sintered materials can be reduced by MTG processing. The anisotropic field dependence of Jc seems to be small for the MTG samples.

The critical current density in melt-textured samples obtained by the powder melting process was determined from magnetization measurements. Linear dependence between the width of the hysteresis loop and sample size was observed for both unirradiated and irradiated samples. This indicates that the c
Flux creep in the high T c oxide YBa2Cu3Oy superconductor in critical state has been investigated by observing the variation of magnetization with time. In this paper the critical density for a polycrystalline sample is calculated assuming a model of weakly coupled superconducting grains and the influence of grain size on the maximum tunnelling current is investigated. In addition the Josephson vortices are shown to be bound by the pinning force inh
