✦ Synopsis

Critical currents J c ðT ; BÞ for virgin and four 235 U doped Bi2223/Ag tapes irradiated with thermal neutrons (U/n treated) were measured in the temperature range T P 50 K and magnetic field B 6 1 T. Below 97 K vortex pinning in U/ n treated tapes increases with matching field B / , as evidenced by a weaker B dependence of J c on increasing B / . Hence, the field B max (F p max ¼ J c B max ) and the irreversibility field B irr ðF p ! 0Þ of U/n treated tapes are enhanced compared to those for virgin tape. Since the rate of the enhancement of B max and B irr with B / depends on T , one can tune the maximum enhancement at desired T .

Transport and AC susceptibility measurements have been performed in Ag sheathed Bi(Pb)2223 tapes. The complex susceptibility ( X' + ix"), has been measured as a function of temperature for various applied fields. From the X"(T) curves the values of the magnetic critical current density have been inf
