✦ Synopsis

Multifilamentary Nb3Sn composite conductors with 65 880 and 421 160 filaments have been fabricated in long lengths by the internal tin-diffusion method. Filament diameters are in the range from 31.1 nm to 274 nm. Conductors were heat treated for 1 to 53 days at various temperatures from 400Β°C to 700Β°C. The critical current density was measured at 4.2 K in an external magnetic field perpendicular to the direction of the current. It increases with decreasing filament diameter and has a peak at filament diameters of 50.1 nm for 0.5T, becomes maximum at 50.1 nm for fields ranging from 0.75 T to 2 T for low field regions and at about 200 nm above 6 T.

A.c. losses for a practical bronze-processed Nb3Sn multifilamentary composite were measured over a wide range of amplitudes (0 ~ B m ~< 14 T, 0 ~Bdc <~ 1 0 T) in transverse magnetic field with trapezoidal wave forms. The composite had a Nb or Ta barrier for ptoecting the Cu stabilizer from Sn diffus
