✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The search for novel inorganic crystal scintillators, driven to a large degree by the rapidly growing needs of established and new applications in medical imaging, security, and high‐energy physics, has become increasingly successful in recent years. Cerium doped halides are known for their high light yield and fast response among other scintillators. However, some cerium doped halides do not always meet the requirements of the applications. M. D. Birowosuto and P. Dorenbos collected the scintillation and luminescence characteristics of cerium doped halides with the aim to ob‐serve the trends that explain why some cerium doped halides show good scintillation properties while others do not. The cover picture shows the scintillation light yield versus the bandgap and the cerium lifetime versus the emission wavelength in cerium doped halides. More elaborate information on the emission wavelength, light yield, and time response of cerium doped halides is available in the Feature Article on pp. 9–20 (Β© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
