✦ Synopsis

Transverse vibrations of drillstrings caused by axial loading and impact with the wellbore wall is studied. The drillstring is modeled as a slender beam with a simply-supported lower part. The Assumed Modes Method is used to obtain the governing equations of motion. Non-linear coupling terms are retained in the formulation which leads to full coupling between the axial and transverse vibration modes. The Hertzian contact theory is used to model impacts between the drillstring and the wellbore wall. The governing non-linear equations are solved numerically to obtain the response. Simulation studies are used to compare the dynamic response obtained from both fully coupled and uncoupled models. Significant differences between the two models are observed. The coupled model yields an unstable behavior at a lower load than the uncoupled model, and the subsequent response is not periodic.

Responses of a beam undergoing both axial and transverse vibration are studied when the beam is subjected to transverse forces. The beam is supported by a torsional spring at the base and has a point mass at the free end. This is a simpli"ed model of a complaint o!shore structure. It is assumed that

In this paper, we present a control strategy for an axially moving web system that regulates transverse vibration and ensures that the web speed tracks a desired trajectory. The control strategy is implemented using roller torque inputs applied at the boundary and a pair of control forces applied to

A compliant offshore tower is modelled as a structure having extensional and transverse degrees of freedom. McIver's extension of Hamilton's principle is applied to the system, resulting in coupled non-linear equations of motion, due to the assumption of small strain and moderate rotation. The equat

Exact solution of free in-plane vibrations of circular arches of uniform cross-section is given by considering axial extension, transverse shear and rotatory inertia effects. In contrast with Kirchhoff's beam theory the restrictions of perpendicular cross-section and inextensible arc length are remo
