Thieme Corrosion People Prof. Michael Schu ¨tzenew EFC President EUROCORR 2005, the annual European corrosion congress of the European Federation of Corrosion (EFC), took place in Lisbon in September. During this event Prof. Michael Schu ¨tze was elected new President of EFC.
The EFC, which celebrated its 50th jubilee this year, currently comprises 30 member societies representing 27 different countries. Its aims include the coordination of research activities in the field of corrosion and corrosion protection in Europe, the advancement of education and teaching, the creation of uniform education standards and also network formation and the exchange of ideas and experience at joint congresses and events.
Under the umbrella of the EFC, European experts are currently working on various, highly application-oriented research areas in 17 different working parties. They include Corrosion in Oil and Gas Production, Corrosion in the Refinery Industry, Marine Corrosion, Microbial Corrosion, Cathodic Protection, Corrosion and Scale Inhibition and the recently founded working party Corrosion of Polymer Materials. The German member societies of the EFC are DECHEMA Gesellschaft fu ¨r Chemische Technik und Biotechnologie e.V. and GfKRR Gesellschaft fu ¨r Korrosionsschutz e.V., both located in Frankfurt am Main/Germany. DECHEMA administers one of the three European EFC general secretariats (besides Socie ´te ´de Chimie Industrielle, Paris, and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, London). Born in 1952, Michael Schu ¨tze studied materials science at the University of Erlangen-Nu ¨rnberg. He obtained his doctorate at RWTH Aachen in 1983 and it was there that he qualified as a university lecturer in 1991 and received the title of professor in 1998. In 1978 Michael Schu ¨tze commenced work as a scientist at Karl-Winnacker-Institut of DECHEMA where he was appointed head of high temperature materials research in 1991. In 1996 he was made a director of the institute. His research priorities address the areas of high temperature oxidation and corrosion, protective layers, and intermetallic compounds. In the year 2000 he was awarded the Rahmel-Schwenk Medal and in 2004 the Otto von Guericke Prize of the AiF. In 1999 he organized the prestigious Gordon Research Conference on Corrosion in his capacity of elected chairman. Michael Schu ¨tze is the author of over 200 scientific publications, the author/editor of 8 books and holds 19 patents.
