β¦ Synopsis
The conversion of furfuraldehyde and furan on the acid form of the zeolite ZSM-5 was studied over the temperature range 35@45O"C. The homogeneous conversion of furfural yields only a polymeric material which condenses at 150Β°C. Its catalytic conversion involves decarbonylation to furan and formaldehyde.
Formaldehyde seems to polymerize to paraformaldehyde in the stainless steel lines. Furan is more resistant and does not yield polymers that condense at 150Β°C. Some condensation products (including benzofuran) are obtained, as well as polymeric material likely to originate from succindialdehyde formed by opening of the furan ring.
