A novel protocol for the organocatalytic conversion of arylglyoxals into the corresponding a-hydroxy arylacetic acid methyl esters has been developed. The catalyst consists of a combination of a commercially available cinchona alkaloid derivative and an achiral thiol and leads to enantiomerically en
