## Abstract The bacterial __dcw__ cluster is a group of genes involved in cell division and peptidoglycan synthesis. Comparison of the cluster across several bacterial genomes shows that its gene content and its gene order are conserved in distant bacterial lineages and, moreover, that, being most

β¦ Synopsis
The cessation of growth in bacterial cultures has been attributed to the depletion of some nutrient factor or factors essential to the anabolic processes of the cells (e.g., Barnes, '31; Jordan and Jacobs, '44; Lockhart and Powelson, '53a). By studying cultures in which total growth was limited by a single nutrient we have found that reproduction of the cells ceases at a time when that substrate is still available. For a short period thereafter the cells continue to utilize the substrate. During this time a spectrum of cellular changes develops that is similar t o one manifested in the late lag and early logarithmic phases of growth. It was also observed

Asymmetric cell division generates two cells that contain different regulatory proteins and express different fates. In an example of asymmetric cell division from B. subtilis, a site on the membrane of the dividing cell is chosen to establish the initial asymmetry. Recent show that a key regulatory
A computer program is described which simulates the growth and DNA replication processes in bacteria. The program is based on a particular model of DNA replication and its coordination with cell division (2, 5, 7). Results of our studies indicate that the model is consistent with a number of experim
