reduced by addition of femc oxide as a third component. It is shown that these results, in conjunction with other considerations, indicate that the changes occurring below the ignition temperatures are genuine solid-solid reactions.

It is suggested that in the propagation of the incandescent reaction the onset of the pre-ignition reaction in the layer just in advance of the flame-front helps to raise the temperature into the region in which incandescent reaction becomes possible. This accounts for the marked reduction in the rate of burning of pellets in which the preignition reaction has already taken place.

For the Fe/BaO, system, it is probable that the chemical changes involved in the pre-ignition and incandescent reactions are different. In mixtures of iron and potassium dichromate, however, there may be a close relationship between the two, and for this system it is in fact sometimes possible f0r.a non-incandescent reaction to be spontaneously propagated along a pellet.

## Abstract Cell‐wall‐less bacterial variants, or L‐forms, have been described in many bacterial species under laboratory conditions, in infected eukaryotic cell cultures and inside animals. Of special interest for human health is the formation of L‐forms as a consequence of specific antibiotic tre
