Contrast is the central feature that makes NMR imaging of interest for materials applications. The principles of contrast in NMR imaging of solids are introduced and illustrated, based on the use of magnetization filters for preparation of thermodynamic nonequilibrium magnetization.

✦ Synopsis
Basic filters are described for preparation of magnetization in imaging. The filters are based on relaxation times, chemical shift selectivity, field distortions from susceptibility differences, and on relaxation during multipulse excitation for manipulation of the dipole ᎐ dipole interaction in solids. Particular attention is paid to the use of these filters in materials applications. The principles of contrast in solid-state imaging have been ( ) treated in Part I of this series Concepts Magn Reson 1998, 10, 19 ᎐ 31 . Part IIb will deal with advanced solid-state filters, spectroscopic parameters, and contrast introduced by sample manipulation.
