โœฆ Synopsis

Continuous monitoring

of a bacterial culture for pH, growth, CO,, and NH3 has been accomplished by means of in situ probes. Changes in the metabolic parameters of Proteus cultures generally occurred about an hour before changes in growth were observed. The time of maximum CO, production preceded that of NH* elaboration by this organism; however, the sequence w&s reversed when urea was added to the medium. This type of in situ monitoring system has great potential for the study of the metabolism of growing organisms as well as for the early detection of growth in liquid culture.
