✦ Synopsis
A double-tube separation system with an Inner tube of nucroporous PTFE and an outer tube of PTFE IS proposed for the contmuous determmatlon of tnhalomethanes (THMs) m waters The THMs m the sample, after reactlon unth sodium hypochlonte solution at 98°C and reducmg the residual hypochlonte with sodium sulphlte, are separated wth the double-tube system at 50°C They are then mured mth alkaline mcotmannde solution and heated at 98°C After coolmg m an ice-bath, the reaction product IS fed to a spectrofluoruneter and the emwlon of fluorescence excited at 372 nm IS measured at 467 nm The response was obtamed wrlthm 20 mm The detection hnut (signal-to-noise ratio = 3) was 2 2 kg I-' The total THM formation potential obtamed by the present method for lake and river waters were m good agreement vvlth those obtamed by the Japanese standard batch method
