โœฆ Synopsis

We have constructed the multigap RPC and investigated its performance in counting efficiency and the time response for the cosmic-ray muons. The multigap structure of resistive plate chamber (RPC) is supposed to be helpful to obtain reasonably large signal without degrading the time resolution. We found that an average time resolution for 3 gap RPC in avalanche mode was about 0.48 ns. The time resolution is considered to be inversely proportional to the gap size.

The performance of glass RPCs operated in avalanche mode has been studied by varying both particle rate (up to about 100 Hz=cm 2 equivalent m.i.p.) and temperature (up to 40 C). The glass RPC rate capability is seen to strongly improve with increasing temperature, due to the lowering of the glass el

We have studied the performance of a glass Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC), operated in streamer mode, with several gas mixtures composed by argon, C 2 H 2 F 4 ; iso-C 4 H 10 and SF 6 : A small percentage of SF 6 strongly reduces the streamer size, increasing the RPC rate capability. The UV photons i
