✦ Synopsis

AbstraetmUnderstanding the behaviour of the diaphragm plate, the primary element in the diaphragm chuck, aids the design improvement of chuck performance. This paper demonstrates how shear stress effects and linear variation in diaphragm plate thickness affect gripping force. The optimum plate thickness variation and ratio of inner to outer plate radii are recommended.

At the outset of designing a new product, knowledge about the product is limited, but the designer has a considerable amount of design freedom. Considering the environmental implications of a product design early in the design phase is a crucial step in achieving an environmentally efficient product
