β¦ Synopsis
Please permit me to add my congratulations to Dr. William Hall who was honored at the recent presidential banquet of the International Society for Biomaterials. I have known Dr. Hall for some twenty years and first became acquainted with him while he was working at the Baylor University College of Medicine in the early 1960's. We collaborated on a number of projects concerned with valve development, fabric graft fabrication, circulatory assist devices and total artificial heart. The early work performed in collaboration with Dr. Doming0 Liotta in the research laboratories at Baylor led up to the first implantation of a total artificial heart on April 4, 1969. While Dr. Hall was not directly involved with the clinical application, his work with Dr. Liotta helped to make possible this spectacular "first".
Dr. Hall has continued his illustrious career in the field of biomedical research and engineering. It is certainly fitting that he would be selected for this award. I add my congratulations to those of others who have known and had the privilege of working as one of his collaborators.
