he fundamental challenge as we move towards and into the next millennium is the quest for sustainable development, in effect the realisation of Agenda 21. The aims of Agenda 21 and the demands required to achieve sustainable development present fundamental challenges to societies, raising a myriad of issues, and bring into question contemporary values, attitudes and patterns of consumption. Tourism, hospitality and leisure are not immune to such issues and some areas of activity may also be the most threatened. Perhaps, paradoxically, these sectors also have a major role to play, for example as educators, promoters and players in the development and adoption of best practice at operational, planning or policy levels and through formulating visitor management strategies for destinations. To address these challenges Glasgow Caledonian University staged `The Environment Matters' conference, held in Glasgow between 29 April and 2 May, 1997. Broad parameters for the conference were established by Agenda 21, which was articulated in terms of the sub-themes of the conference:
