Whereas I-benryl-2-lithtomethyl-4,5-dihydrotmidazole undergoes reverstble 1,2-addttton to aldehydes and ketones. the derived phosphonate salt, I-benzyl-2.lithio(diethylphosphono)methyl-4,5dihydroimidazole, affords the condensation products, 2.( 1 -alkenyl)-4,5-dihydroimidazoles; these latter undergo conjugate addition wtth carbon nucleophiles.
