✦ Synopsis

The diagnosis of cortical desmoid in the typical case is easily established using conventional radiography. In atypical cases, the use of computed tomography (CT) may be helpful in diagnosis. We report the use of computed tomography in two patients with cortical desmoids. In one case plain radiographic findings were not diagnostic and the use of CT obviated biopsy. The findings of a desmoid in an atypical location, the insertion site of the medial head of the gastrocnemius tendon, is discussed.

Desmoplastic fibroma of bone is a rare benign tumor, first described by Jaffe in 1958. Since then approximately 80 cases have been reported in the long bones, although the tumor also involves the jaw bones, particularly the mandible. ## Abstract It is difficult to assess from conventional x‐rays the amount of loading that a bone can tolerate. The question therefore was asked whether the mechanical properties of cortical bone could be estimated by using a computed tomography (CT) system typically employed in the clinical setting
