✦ Synopsis

Highly correlated calculations of the collinear, symmetric break-up of helium trimer ions are carried out using an MRD-CI expansion and over a broad range of fragment relative distances. The general features of the lower roots of Xg, ~o, IIg and IIu symmetries are analysed in relation to recent experimental findings and are found to provide an explanation for the observed behaviour of the experimental fragmentation peaks.

Bimodal kinetic energy release distributions (KERDs) were obtained for the metastable ion reactions: CH~C(OH)=\*Ctl~ -L CHS + \*CH$O+ and CH3CH2C(OH)=CIIz ---I+ 4 C-H; + CH$O+-The biilodality is attributed to incomplete intmmolecular energy redistribution in the short-lived internlediate keto ions,
