✦ Synopsis
Many authors 1-6 have shown that quinol reacts with ions of the metals Mo, V, Ti, Sb, W, Ta and Nb, in concentrated sulfuric acid medium, to give colored complexes which can be used for the quantitative determination of these metals by photometric methods.
Concentrated sulfuric acid solutions containing from 96 to 99 ~o w/w H2SO 4 were found to be suitable for polarographic work 7 for organic substances and also for metals whose half-wave potentials are less negative than -0.7 V. Molybdate ion gives an excellent quantitative step in 9 M sulfuric acid 8, two waves in 10-14 M 9, and two waves in 92 ~ w/w H2SO4 l°. The aim of this work is to use concentrated sulfuric acid as a base solution to study the polarographic behavior of molybdenum in the presence of quinol, and to obtain information about the complexes formed.
