✦ Synopsis

T his contribution focuses on designers from practice who have had neither education at a university nor education in design methodology. These experienced designers, named p-designers in the following paper, have mainly had a practical education as draughtsman, technician or master craftsman. p-designers often do not use procedures of conventional design methodology. The support of design methodology is often looked upon sceptically 2 . Nevertheless, p-designers are successful designers with regard to the quality and duration of the design processes.

In comparison with p-designers, we observed designers who had education in design methodology at a university and gained design experience from 1 Gu ¨nther, J and Ehrlenspiel, K How do designers from practice design?
