✦ Synopsis


The qualitative and quantitative composition of the essential oils of three Eupatorium species (Compositae) has been investigated for the first time. All three species grow spontaneously in the central area of South America. The essential oils were obtained by steam distillation of leaves and analysed by GC-MS. Altogether, 23 components were identified. a-Pinene (11.0-17.0%) was characteristic of all the Eupatorium species studied. p-Cymene (12.5-24.8%) was also a predominant constituent of E. argentinum Ariza and E. subhastarum Hook. and Am., while the other important compound of E. hecatanthum (DC.) Baker was thymyl acetate (10.6%).
